Uniform Anatomical Gift Act (2006) Targeted!
The revised Uniform Anatomical Gift Act (2006) was put on the target list by the Legislative Council of the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws at its meeting in November. This designation is a signal to uniform law commissioners throughout the country to make enactment of the targeted act a priority due to the importance of the topic and the perceived support in the states for its adoption.

20 States Enact UAGA (2006) in 2007!
Twenty states enacted the new Uniform Anatomical Gift Act of 2006 last year and many more are planning to introduce a bill in 2008. Please check "Enactment Status" for more details.

Welcome

Welcome to the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act (“UAGA”) website, sponsored by the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws ("NCCUSL"). The NCCUSL has been at the forefront of organ donation law since the promulgation of the original UAGA nearly four decades ago. In 2006, after more than two years of exhaustive study, the NCCUSL promulgated the Revised UAGA (2006) as a replacement for both the 1968 and 1987 versions of the Act. The 2006 revision was prepared with the active participation of the whole range of stakeholders. The Revised UAGA facilitates donations and modernizes the Act to reflect changes in federal law and regulations governing organ procurement and allocation as well as changes in organ donation practices. Lastly, the Act brings needed uniformity where minutes are too precious to permit wasting time deciphering divergence in state laws.

As chairman of the UAGA Drafting Committee, I hope you will find this website to be a valuable resource. In addition to the full text of the 2006 UAGA, this site contains a useful summary of the Act, various articles and materials prepared during the drafting process, and the latest information on the Act’s enactment status.

Thank you for your interest in the UAGA. Since nearly every hour, a patient dies waiting for an available organ, we hope you will find the improvements in this Revised Act to be desirable to facilitate life saving transplantations and to reduce the substantial shortfall of available and transplantable organs and tissue.

Sincerely,
Carlyle C. Ring, Jr.
UAGA Committee Chairman
